What is the current state of AI?

Stanford University recently published a new report “Gathering Strength, Gathering Storms: The One Hundred Year Study on Artificial Intelligence (AI100) 2021 Study Panel Report”, this report was created by an international panel of scholars assesses the current state of the field, technical and societal challenges, and what lies ahead regarding artificial intelligence.

The study explores in greater depth the impact that AI is having on people and societies worldwide. As we know AI is being used in many applications that involved people´s lives for example; healthcare, emotional care, mobility, etc. They have analyzed all the information available, and gave their analysis.

We are pleased as C-TRAIES to highlight the most important points of this report, which is of utmost importance to understand how far artificial intelligence has advanced.

-The most important breakthroughs in AI were on the fields of: Robotics, Health, Mobility, Finance, Games, Computer Vision and Image Processing, Language Processing, and Underlying Technologies.

-The most inspiring AI challenges are:

• RoboCup is an established grand challenge in AI and robotics with the goal of developing a fully autonomous robot team capable of beating the FIFA World Cup champion soccer.

• The International Math Olympiad (IMO) is an international mathematics competition for high-school students. Related to Reddy’s challenge in mathematical discovery is to build an AI system that can win a gold medal in the IMO.

• The AI Scientist challenge envisions the development, by 2050, of AI systems that can engage in autonomous scientific research.

-The report grants some keys to the governments about how the AI has to be developed and used responsibly, but also offer some ideas about how the academia and industry should develop, deploy and oversight of AI technologies.

-The report also brings to the analysis very interesting and controversial topics such as the following; what considerations should policy makers have, in order to apply artificial intelligence in society and governance.

The most pressing challenges and significant opportunities in the use of artificial intelligence to provide physical and emotional care to people in need.
